Who is a team player?


Teams are what make companies flourish, and these teams are made up of people. People who come from various backgrounds, cultures as well as varied homes structures. That is why a team that is diverse will have its own advantages. You will hear the word team player synonymous to working culture and recruitments. The question always raised in interviews are, “Are you a team player?”. The dictionary definition of being a team player is a person who plays or works well as a member of a team.



Team work is every one’s responsibility. What we need to remember is that in a team, there are people who are differently abled. Each team player comes with unique capabilities and abilities. If every team player’s USP is identified, and it is put to good use, then the team will flourish.


The role of a team player can never be undermined. The performance of one member can affect the performance of the team overall. It can also affect the performance of the other team members. For great companies to function, it has to be made up of good team work. With good teamwork, any obstacle can be met head on and solutions can be worked on.


Team players are assets to the team and it is good to promote healthy learning environments for all team members to reach their potential. This requires collaboration from all team players.


A team player is someone who actively contributes to their group in order to complete tasks, meet goals or manage projects. Team players actively listen to their co-workers, respect ideas and aim to improve the product or process at hand. Team players understand that their team’s success is their own success, and they share responsibility when their team experiences difficulties along the way.


Why is it important to be a team player?


There are many reasons why it is important to be a team player.

  • One of the reasons is that it helps the team grow and that in turn helps in the overall growth of the company.

  • Being a team player means working towards a common goal.

  • There will be a sense of value in the work that is done.

  • Everybody’s work is contributory to the success of the team.

  • There will be a burst of new ideas and new perspectives.

  • Team work helps to solve problems collectively.

  • Team work brings in support within the team work.

  • This also boost the morale of the team members.

  • Team work will help a colleague that needs help.

  • Team work brings structure to the team.

  • Team work increases bonding within the team members.

  • Making team members feel the team is a family goes a long way to them wanting to give the team their best effort.
